DESCRIPTION

Ocean Optics has developed the DH-2000-HPLC which is an integrated flow cell plus light source that functions as a compact, high-sensitivity detector for High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analyses. The DH-2000-HPLC is typically specified for use with Ocean Optics' high-sensitivity miniature fiber optic spectrometers, optical fiber, and special chroma-tography software. With those components (the spectrometer, fiber optic connection, and detection software) which are available separately, a complete HPLC system for UV detection can be configured for less than $6,000.

The DH-2000-HPLC consists of the DH-2000 Light Source and a high-pressure liquid chromatography flow cell. The cell couples to Ocean Optics' S2000 Miniature Fiber Optic Spectrometer via an optical fiber to create a convenient, small-footprint HPLC detector system for complete spectral analysis from ~220 nm -1100 nm.

The DH-2000-HPLC has a 10-mm path length, a 1/16" connector, and 10 ml volume. Its maximum flow range is 20 mL/minute. Additional specifications for the flow cell and the light source are available in the specifications tables.

       APPLICATION

HPLC is a popular method of analysis. HPLC can be applied to many analyses because it is not limited by the volatility or stability of the sample compound. Its applications include separation, identification, purifi-cation, and quantification of various compounds.

There are many varied detector systems for HPLC. The choice of a detector is based upon the response of the detector to the eluting sample compound. Both ultra-violet (UV) and near-infrared (Near-IR) detection have been very successfully used with most all liquid chromatographs. The DH-2000-HPLC provides for both to be used in conjunction with the S2000 spectrometer. Although sensitivity of detection varies with the com-pound to be measured and with the separation columns used, most UV detection will provide sensitivities to approximately 10-8 or 10-9 gm/ml.

UV detection for HPLC is widely accepted as an excellent technique for biotechnological, biomedical, and biochemical research as well as for the pharma-ceutical industry. Also, HPLC with UV detection is being increasingly used in a variety of fields including cosmetic formulation, oil & gas production, and food processing.
