Ceram research color standards

CERAM Research Ceramics Standards, also known as BCRA Series II tiles, are the accepted color standards in North America and throughout the world. These standards can be used to calibrate spectrometers and spectrophotometers in both hemispherical and in directional geometry. Avian Technologies BCRA sets consist of fourteen 2" tiles (the standard BCRA set plus a black and a white tile), mounted and sealed to prevent effects of humidity. Standards come in a wooden box with a desiccant.

The CERAM standards are available in two directional calibrations and in an un­calibrated set.

Individual color standards

It is sometimes practical to assure that a spectrometer stays within calibration without running a complete calibration with the full set of color standards. The use of a single color standard can often provide a practical color calibration point. It has been determined that the best tile within the BCRA Series II set for a single calibration point is the cyan tile. This tile, either calibrated or uncalibrated, is made to the same specifications as the com­plete set described above.

Other tiles, depending upon the color wanted, may be available upon request.

Avian color tile sets

Avian Technologies, in part­nership with Mt. Baker Research, has developed a complete line of ceramic color transfer standards. These tiles are described here, and full spectra response data is available. Request such from Ancal.

The Avian sets include (A.) the basic set shown to the left, (B.) the Grey Scale and Pastel colors set and (C.) the special colors set.

Avian gold standards and targets

Diffuse gold is an excellent standard for wavelengths from above 850 nm to >15 µm. Avian Gold offers high diffuse reflectance of > 94% from 1000 nm to well into the mid-infrared.

Both standards and targets are avail­able from Avian, either calibrated or uncalibrated, ranging from 2" square to 10" square.

Custom sizes of targets are available upon request.

Russian opal glass standards

Russian Opal Glass MC-20 is useful as a durable white standard in the vis­ible and near infrared. Although used both in its glossy form and in matt form, it is primarily used in its glossy form. The glossy Russian opal is easily cleaned and quite stable. Rus­sian Opal is the preferred standard for direction/directional geometry such as 0/45 or for multi-angle spectros­copy. It is also useful as a standard for hemispherical measurements.

Glossy Russian opal standards are available as 2" (50.8 mm) squares in a black holder and a wooden box for protection. Larger sizes (up to 90 mm square) are available by special order.


Opal Glass p/n MROG-02C

Avian Technologies has a highly matte Russian Opal Glass standard. The standard has gloss levels of <0.2 units at 60°. The material also offers excellent re­flectance properties far into the NIR. This standard has found great usage in the paper industry.

It is available in a single configu­ration. The active area of this stan­dard is 50 mm diameter, mounted in a Delrin holder with cover.

Reflectance Wavelength Calibration Standards

Rare Earth Oxide Standards are for the calibration of UV-Vis-NIR spec­trometers and spectrophotometers. These wavelength calibration stan­dards display sharp absorbance peaks over much of the UV-Vis-NIR spectral range. The mixture of rare earth oxides are chosen to give the best coverage over the wavelength range of interest. UV-Vis and Vis-NIR standards are available both in regular sizes and in custom sizes and configurations.

UV-Vis Calibration Standards are a mixture of holmium and erbium oxides in an inert, durable, spectrally neutral matrix. The UV-Vis stan­dards are traceable to the National Research Council Canada and NIST. Available in 1.25" (37 mm) and 2" (50.8 mm) diameter sizes in a Del­rin™ holder with cover. These standards are ideal for calibration of UV-Vis spectrophotometers. They are calibrated from 250-850 nm.

Near Infrared Calibration Standards are a mixture of dysprosium, holmium, and samarium oxides in an inert, durable, spectrally neutral matrix. These Avian Technologies wavelength calibration standards are traceable to the National Research Council Canada and NIST. They are available in 1.25" (37 mm) and 2" (50.8") diameter sizes in a DelrinTM holder with cover.

In addition to these standards, there are similar highly purified powder standards in hermetically sealed 1.5 inch (37 mm) dia anodized aluminum holders with optical glass windows in accord with NIST SRM-1920a.
