Reflection / backscatter probes

Optical fibers are integral components in most all Ocean Insights’ miniature fiber optic spectrometer system. Optical fiber technology makes possible in situ analyses, as it allows “taking the instru­ment to the sample.”

It is optical fiber technology that allows convenient sampling, whether it be in sample containers or in process lines. This concept provides users with a wide range of flexible approaches to analytical work.

Transmission dip probes

Trans­mission dip probes provide for measuring absorbance and trans­mission in solutions. These probes may be used for discreet measurements and for continuous online (process steams) providing real-time sample analyses and monitoring.

The probes use interchangeable tips that provide different pathlengths.

Reflection/Backscattering Probes

Fiber Optic Reflection / Backscattering Probes are used for measuring specular or diffuse reflectance from surfaces fluorescence from solids, or back­scatter­ing and fluorescence in solutions and powders. These Reflection / Backscattering Probes couple to fiber optic spectro­meters and light sources.

Reflection probes are available in 3 fiber sizes (200, 400 and 600 µm).

These probes can be optimized for the UV/VIS (250-800 nm) or VIS/NIR (400-2100 nm) or in a combination of both ranges.

Attenuated Total Reflectance Probe

The Attenuated Total Reflecton Probe is designed for measuring highly absorbent samples. The ATR Probe is especially suit­able for measurements of materials that have absorbance values in the 4000-5000 AU/cm range. The ATR Probe can be inserted directly into the sample solution and spectra can be taken without sample preparation or sample dilution. Typical applications involve measurements of raw inks, dyes and crude oil samples.

In addition, the ATR Probe can be used to measure film deposition probe if the refractive index (RI) of the material that is depositing on the probe in cases where the material being deposited on the probe tip is greater than the RI of the ATR’s sapphire crystal (greater than 1.7).

Analytical probes

There are many other specialized probes for various analytical work. A probe which is for use with a Raman spectrometer is available. This is further discussed in systems.

As is discussed in more detail in the pH and O2 application report, probes for measurements of pH and oxygen concentrations are available.

Also, probes for processes and on-line monitoring are available. Some probes are very robust to function in challenging environments.
